Focus on Family
Surely there can be no greater concern in the Lord’s church today than keeping our
families faithful in the work of the Lord. This by no means is stated to undermine the importance
of the church and its responsibilities regarding evangelism. But, if we lose our families, we will
not have the wherewithal to be about saving souls for the Lord. There was a time when our little
boys were encouraged to become song leaders, Bible class teachers and preachers. There was a
time when families were actively involved together in the work of the church. But it seems as if
today our time is so filled with the things of this world that we have little time for the work of the
We see in our world today the decay of families. Children being raised in single parent
homes. Even worse, children left on their own to figure out life. Perhaps, by some good fortune,
grandparents have stepped in to give some guidance, but is that God’s plan? And then the cry
goes out, “What are we to do?”
The elders have chosen for our Summer Series to concentrate on the theme, “Focus on
the Family”. Beginning Wednesday evening, June 1, we will focus on sharing ways in which we
can make our families stronger, and in so doing helping to make the church stronger. Jamie
Rochell, from the Fountain Hill congregation will begin the series with the lesson, “Keeping
Families Faithful in the Church”. We will have different speakers for the month of June and then
beginning July 6 we will watch a DVD series by Dr. Kevin Leman entitled, “Have a New Family
by Friday”. This is a series of lessons providing a practical plan for a happier home in 5 days. I
hope you will plan now to be present each Wednesday evening as we examine how to make our
families stronger for the Lord. Be sure to invite a friend, neighbor or family member to share in
this series. There are flyers on the back table of the auditorium to use in helping to remind folks
of this opportunity.
VBS is right around the corner—June 13-16. The theme this year is “The Voyage of the
Alpha and Omega”. The lessons will help us discover the riches of Jesus. Our teachers are in
place, but we need Group Leaders to help get our children from class to class. I hope you will
take the opportunity to help in any way you can to make this VBS a great success. There is on
the back table of the auditorium a “sign-up” sheet for Group Leaders and for T-Shirts.
The first step in making our families stronger in the Lord is to be present for worship
(VBS, fellowships, meetings, etc.) each and every time possible. Mark on your calendar these
important dates as we strive to grow in the Lord! ~ P. Mowrer
