VBS: COME AND GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Almost like Christmas, preparation and expectations for VBS consume months, but then

it is over so quickly and everything returned to “normal”. Words cannot begin to express my

appreciation for all the work put into making this VBS such a good week for our children.

Naming names will only set me up for missing someone, and everyone who helped was so very

important. From skits to registration, teaching centers to crafts, and don’t forget meal time and

snack time, making for a very filled two hours each evening. Booster and prizes, songs, T-shirts

and smiles are moments that will be remembered for weeks to come. And even though not

always mentioned, don’t forget all who helped keep the building clean and then get it all back in

order for Sunday. Yes, we have many special individuals and all deserve a great round of

applause for your efforts before, during and after our “Voyage”! By our count (do I dare suggest

a “preacher count”!), we had at least 60 adults involved in work sometime during the week. We

reached a high of 62 children Tuesday evening, surpassing our high last year by 14!

Congratulations to our children for making great efforts inviting friends to join them for the

As we begin to put VBS 2016 behind us, it is important to take a few lessons or

challenges with us. Some of these have been shared before, but always worth noting.

1) Our decorated classrooms invited children in to participate and to be ready to learn the

story for each night. Even though emphasis is placed on the lessons taught, how much more

appealing to our children can we make each and every week? I know, it demands a little extra

planning and preparation, but isn’t it worth it as we teach our children the wonderful lessons of

God and Jesus?

2) A great effort was put into bringing visitors to VBS. Of course, we had lots of

encouragement from Booster and prizes given out to those who brought the most. But what

better motivation do we need for inviting others for worship and study than the thought of

another soul saved for the Lord? Be sure to be inviting friends and family to hear the gospel

taught each and every time we gather to worship.

3) I am appreciative of all those who stepped in to help make VBS week special. We

cannot underestimate the importance of each individual. The church grows when the complete

body works together. There is always something for someone to be doing to help in the work of

the church. Not sure what? Take a moment to visit with an elder or deacon, and I have no doubt

something will be made available for you to grow in service and leadership!

VBS has come and gone, but what wonderful opportunities lie ahead for us all!
