You Are a Slave, and May Not Even Know It.
Our lives are full of choices, and one of the most important choices we will ever make is who our
master will be. All of us serve something or someone. We all have something we spend our time and
money on. What do you serve? What takes the minutes and days of your life?
The New Testament speaks about this choice in several passages. Let’s look at two passages that
deal with the issue of slavery. Our first passage is written to a group of Christians who have made the
choice, but need to be reminded of the change that God has made in their lives. “Don’t you know that
when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether
you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be
to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of
teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves
to righteousness” (Romans 6:16-18).
Paul said we will serve. We will be slaves to sin, or slaves to righteousness. Jesus speaks about
this same idea. In the book of Matthew, we see Jesus talk about those who choose to obey God, and to
make him their Lord and Master. “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11: 28-30).
We will serve and work for something or someone. Wouldn’t you rather serve a master that loves
you and wants the best for you? Jesus does say we must take up a yoke. We will have work to do. The
work we do is out of love and because of the love that God has for us. He will not ask you to do more
than you are able to handle. What do you serve? ~B Tolbert
