The Other John 3:16
One of the most beloved passages in all of scripture is John 3:16. Countless lives have been
touched by its beauty and promise. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten
Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
Jesus’ powerful words contain many great truths. God’s love is immeasurable and His sacrifice
illustrates His love and total commitment (Hebrews 13:5). Yet, there is another John 3:16 that
can change our lives. “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also
ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16).
The difference in John 3:16 and 1 John 3:16 is the cross. In John 3:16, Jesus had not yet
made the ultimate sacrifice (Romans 5:6-11) so we could be saved (Romans 6:23; 2 Peter 3:9).
The promise became real when Christ shed His blood, thus providing an avenue of salvation (1
John 1:7). God gave His Son, Jesus gave His life and He waits to see what we will give. Sadly,
most aren’t willing to give anything (Matt. 7:13-14). We have the greatest example of love ever
given. He doesn’t ask us to die for the world, but spiritually for our brethren. We slay our
selfishness and give freely of ourselves. Our spiritual transformation leads us to act on the love
and commitment of the Lord.
Our Christian walk must be with sacrificial love and service (1 John 4:7-11). We lay down
our lives for our brethren by putting them before ourselves. Jesus did the impossible and all He
asks is for us is to do the selfless and loving thing. The question is simple but supremely
difficult. Will we say no to self and yes to the Savior? If we can, Heaven will be our home.
