Candling an Egg

When you look at an egg what do you see? By just looking on the outside surface you
can’t really tell much about what is inside. If you have ever had eggs fresh from the farm there
can be surprises. Even with store bought eggs you can sometimes find eggs with double yolks.
Finding out what is on the inside seems like it should be impossible without cracking the egg
open. However, you can shine a light through the egg and suddenly you can see what is inside.
“Candling” is a method used in embryology to study the growth and development of an
embryo inside an egg. The method uses a bright light source behind the egg to show details
through the shell, and is so called because the original sources of light used were candles.
Why am I talking about eggs? When someone looks at you, they can’t really tell what
kind of person you are. What is going on inside your mind. How do we tell what a person is
really like? We usually must wait until the person speaks or acts. Through a person’s words and
actions, we can find out what type of person they are. “The good person out of his good treasure
brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil” (Matthew 12:35).
When Jesus was on earth, He spoke to the Scribes and Pharisees. “Woe to you, scribes
and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are
full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the
plate, that the outside also may be clean” (Matthew 23:25-26).
God can see more than our surface. God can see the heart to the very thoughts of our
mind. “God, who knows the heart…” (Acts 15:8). “God is light and in Him there is no
darkness” (1 John 1:5). God’s light shines to our very core and He truly know us, He has seen
every dark place of our heart (Rom. 5:8). ~ Brad Tolbert
