Is Your Heart Full Or A Vacuum
I recently saw an interesting scientific demonstration, in which a bowling ball and feathers
were dropped at the same time. As expected when they dropped the bowling ball smashed down
with great force, while the feathers floated down slowly and softly. They had a large chamber
several stories high with thick doors and walls in which they could pump the air out after about 3
hours, forming an almost perfect vacuum. When the bowling ball and feathers were dropped in
the vacuum they dropped at the same speed, side by side, all the way down, crashing into the
floor at the same time.
First, when they dropped the objects in the vacuum, it’s like people in the world when they
face problems. They have nothing to depend on, nothing they can turn to that has any true power.
When you are a Christian, you have something that you can depend on, that you can turn to when
life drops you. You can depend on God and His word to lift you up and soften the blows of life
much like the air held up the feathers and softened their fall. “So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you
with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every
situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace
of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus.” (Phil. 4:6-7).
Second, I thought about the room itself. The room had to have thick walls and a large door
several feet thick. When the room is full of air it is strong and has no need for all the extra
structure and strength. When the room has the air removed it becomes a vacuum and all the air is
pressing in on the room trying to crush it. People in the world have a void in their hearts they are
trying to fill, but cannot be satisfied. God is the answer. “Now may the God of hope fill you with
all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the
Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). ~ Brad Tolbert
