God and Laughter
There are times in the Old Testament when scripture says God Laughs. They seem to be
times when people choose to disobey and raise their fist up to God. God seems to look down on
mans actions at these times and He sees the futility of their plans and actions and He laughs at
them. “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set
themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed,
saying, ‘Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.’ He who sits in the
heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. ...” (Psalm 2:1-12, ESV). (Other passages
where God laughs include Psalm 37:13; 59:8 and Proverbs 1:26-28).
Have you ever had a really small kitten attack your hand? They are so serious about it
and yet they really can’t accomplish much. I think God may be looking down on us shaking his
head and laughing at times, at the futility of man. Maybe it could be a little like the Three
Stooges if they decided to rob a bank. Can you imagine how they would mess that up? They
would probably end up with themselves tied up, locked up in the vault, just waiting for the police
to show up. God is so much more than we are or ever can be! God is all powerful, all knowing,
yet man tries to go his own way and go against God’s plan.
Wouldn’t it be better if God was genuinely happy with us? “The LORD your God is in
your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rest in His love; He will exult over you with loud
singing” (Zephaniah 3:17, ESV). Isn’t this what you want? To make God happy. The idea of
God rejoicing because He is pleased with us should be the goal of every Christian. Can you
imagine God being so happy with you that He sings out with joy? ~B Tolbert
