SHOW ME!
In the Broadway musical, “My Fair Lady”, one of the characters (Freddy) is singing his
undying love for Eliza Doolittle (the main character). She has heard all the words she cares to
hear and goes on the following rant:
Words! Words! Words! I'm so sick of words! I get words all day through;…
Don't talk of stars burning above; If you're in love, Show me!
Tell me no dreams filled with desire. If you're on fire, Show me!

Make me no undying vow. Show me now!
Sing me no song! Read me no rhyme! Don't waste my time, Show me!
Don't talk of June, Don't talk of fall! Don't talk at all! Show me!
Never do I ever want to hear another word.
I wonder if the Lord ever feels a little like Eliza, “Words, words, words, I’m so sick of
words…”? One day a week we assemble together to praise the name of the Lord, partake of His
feast, spend a little time in His Word and then go blissfully on our way, content that we have
praised God for another week. We have been studying in our Small Study Groups, “The
Christian and His Influence”, but are we taking these words and living them in our lives on a
daily basis. Are we showing Christ in our life in all that we say and do, or have we allowed our
lights to be hidden under a bushel (Matt. 5:14-15)?
Time and time again, the Lord warned the Israelites through His prophets that He was tired
of the repeated sacrifices and feast days. His desire was for lives which portrayed holiness to a
holy God. “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to
do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8)? Jesus condemned
the Pharisees and warned the multitudes regarding them, “...therefore all that they tell you, do
and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things, and do not do them”
(Mt. 23:3). In other words, “Practice what you preach!”
Are you being the influence for the Lord that He wants you to be? Not what we think we
are, but what the Lord wants us to be? Too often there is a difference in those questions. We may
answer according to what makes us feel good, but the Lord’s answer will be according to His
commands! No more words, no more dreams, and no more “undying vow”. Let us show the Lord
our love and in so doing show the world the love of God! ~ P. Mowrer
