AS SIMPLE AS 1, 2, 3
Some things are as simple as 1, 2, 3—although some things take time to become simple. We
don’t have any problems tying our shoes, right? I do remember, however, using a big wooden
shoe in preschool to learn how to tie my shoes. That was some 45 years ago, so today, tying my
shoes is as simple as 1, 2, 3.
The same could be said of basic morning tasks like brushing our teeth or hair. Why is it,
though, that (what should be) routine practices like reading our Bibles, praying, and worshipping
can be such difficult tasks? We wouldn’t think of leaving our houses in the morning without
brushing our teeth. Yet, if we are not careful, basic spiritual practices like prayer can be forgotten
days at a time.
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and
night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will
make your way prosperous, and then you will have success” (Joshua 1:8).
“Now when Daniel knew that the document was signed, he entered his house (now in his
roof chamber he had windows open toward Jerusalem); and he continued kneeling on his knees
three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously”
(Daniel 6:10).
“And according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with
them from the Scriptures, explaining and giving evidence that the Christ had to suffer and rise
again from the dead, and saying, ‘This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the Christ’” (Acts
17:2-3).
“But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ lest anyone of
you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13).
Don’t wait until next year, next month, or even next week. Begin today by establishing good
practices that honor God and strengthen us spiritually. Begin this Sunday by attending Bible
class or Sunday evening worship —even if it hasn’t been your custom. Make it a practice to read,
pray, study, worship, and encourage. ~Johnny Hobbie
