Power in the Blood

We really need an understanding of the entire Bible, both Old and New Testament
passages to understand the power of blood. In the Old Testament we learn of the importance of
blood for redeeming us and making us sanctified. “For the life of a creature is in the blood, and
I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes
atonement for one's life” (Leviticus 17:11).
The idea and importance of blood was not lost on the New Testament writers. “When
Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves,
together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the
people. He said, ‘This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.’ In
the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its
ceremonies. In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without
the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Hebrews 9:19-22).
Jesus, Himself, makes the connection for us between His own blood, which was about to
be shed, and the importance it would play in the establishment of the new covenant between God
and mankind. “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28). Through the power of Christ’s blood and sacrifice we
have salvation and access to all spiritual blessings. “In Him we have redemption through His
blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7).
In this brief article we can only scratch the surface of what there is to learn. There are so many
lessons if we will only take the time and study. We even sing songs about the power in the blood
to remind us that we were bought at a price through the blood of Christ. Have you been cleansed
by the blood? Have your sins been washed away by that precious blood of the perfect sacrifice?
