READING THE BIBLE, EVERYDAY!
We have almost completed the first month of the study “Look at the Book”. How are you
doing so far keeping up with the daily Bible reading? Are you working the “fast boat”, or are you
content with the “slow boat” study of God’s Word. Remember, whichever study you choose, we
will all end up together at the end of the year. I want you to know how much I have enjoyed the
participation in class as we study a “new” book each week. I also enjoy the comments and
questions I get throughout the week, showing me that so many are taking on this challenge in a
very serious way. You will truly be blessed as you spend time in the Bible on a daily basis. Have
you encouraged your children in reading each day? No, it would be unreasonable to think our
younger ones could read the entire Bible in a year, but with your help, our children can be
introduced to a love for the Bible which will last a lifetime!
More than anything, I hope that through this study, each of us will develop a great love for
God’s Word. The psalmist repeatedly encouraged this love for the Word when writing, “How
blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart” (Ps. 119:2).
All 176 verses of Psalm 119 focus the reader’s attention on knowing God’s laws and commands.
Not only knowing, but meditating on and putting them in our hearts, and then living them day to
day. “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word” (vs. 9).
“Teach me, O Lord, the way of Thy statutes, and I shall observe it to the end” (vs. 33). “The
Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Thy words” (vs. 57). Of course, keeping God’s
Word demands that we know His Word! And the only way to know His Word is to spend time
each and every day reading from His Word. May we develop the love for God’s Word as the
psalmist had, “O how I love Thy law! It is my mediation all the day” (vs. 97). “Thy word is a
lamp to my feet, and a light to my path” (vs. 105). “Thy word I have treasured in my heart, that I
may not sin against Thee” (vs. 11).
But let’s not stop with just reading His Word. As we read each day, make sure we are
spending time meditating on the words which can enlighten our ways, and then examine
ourselves (2 Cor. 13:5) to be sure that we are living the words we are reading! I think that is the
real challenge in our study for the year. Many may read the Bible everyday, but treat it as a
novel, that once it is read it has no more hold on us. May God’s Word be our guide in life day by
day as we strive to be transformed into the image of the Lord (2 Cor. 3:18; Phil. 2:5-8).
