True Christianity (part 2)

Being a Christian means that God has expectations of us. He has given us commands and
instructions to follow. Everything, every action, every word must be done in love. “Let all that
you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). Nothing is left out of this simple command. All
that we do must be done in love.
Love is especially to be shown to our fellow Christians. “Above all, keep loving one
another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Our love for each other
should be something easily seen and felt. We should show each other honor and respect no
matter what the situation. “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in
showing honor” (Romans 12:10). Our words and actions are important. “Be completely humble
and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2).
The way we speak to each other will build someone up or bring them down. “Do not let
any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up
according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4:29). In our texts,
social media, and our speech, our words need to be positive and shared in love.
A person who does not love others, or treat others with respect and kindness, does not
understand the teachings of God. “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is
love” (1 John 4:8). One day we will be judged by the words that we speak. Are the words that
you speak full of love, patience, and kindness. Or is your tone harsh and your words uncaring
and mean spirited? “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment
for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your
words you will be condemned" (Matthew 12:36-37). ~B Tolbert
