GROWING IN FAITH

The inspired writers of Scripture encouraged the early church to grow. The apostle Peter
challenged Christians to “long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in
respect to salvation,…” (1 Peter 2:2) and to “...grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). The apostle Paul made a similar challenge that
Christians, by “...speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him…” (Eph.
4:15). The Hebrew writer chastised God’s children, “For by this time you ought to be teachers,
you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God,
…” (Hebrews 5:12).
But how do we grow in faith? I’m glad you asked. There are several opportunities in the
next two months in which we can participate and make strides in growing spiritually in the Lord.
Men can participate in the Men’s Breakfast provided each third Saturday of the month,
beginning at 6:00 in the morning. And even though it is just breakfast, it is an opportunity to
know each other better, leading to growing in the Lord.
Sunday, September 15 the teens and their families are invited to participate in taking
communion to the shut-ins at The Woods. We will serve lunch immediately following morning
worship and then go to The Woods. This is a wonderful opportunity for our teens, but also for
our families to be a part of serving our elderly.
Saturday, October 12 has been set aside to “door knock” for our Gospel Meeting beginning
Oct. 20. We have not done a door knocking campaign for many years. This will be an
opportunity to let folks know about our new location and the upcoming meeting. More
information will be shared as we get closer to this day. Please be sure to reserve this date.
October 20 through the 22 is our Gospel Meeting with Brad Harrub, Executive Director of
Focus Press and professional Christian apologetic. He will speak three times on Sunday at our
building. Monday and Tuesday evening he will be speaking on UAM’s campus. We need to
support this effort, not just at our location, but also on campus. This is an opportunity to show to
others our interest and love for God’s Word being proclaimed.
Space does not allow the listing of gospel meetings in the area which serve to challenge us
in our growth for the Lord. We tend to dismiss these for whatever reason, but they are another
opportunity to spend time praising God and hearing His Word proclaimed. All this together will
help us as we strive “like newborn babies” to grow in the faith! ~P. Mowrer
