Darkness!
I was so happy when the power company trucks pulled up to replace the broken pole near
our house. We have become very used to having electricity and all the conveniences that come
along with it. Life without lights, heat, and hot water is okay for a while, but I would not want to
live that way all the time.
Darkness has long been associated with danger and evil people doing things they are not
supposed to do. The imagery of Dark and Light are very prominent in the Bible. God is
described as the creator of light (Genesis 1:3) and light often represents good. Darkness is often
used to represent the world and evil. “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation. God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of
darkness into His wonderful light” (1 Pet. 2:9). We are a people who are called out of darkness
and the evil of this world. We are called to something much better, the forgiveness and eternal
life with God.
Watch who you are spending time with. What are you watching? What are you listening to?
What, or who, are you allowing to influence you? “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers.
For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have
with dark- ness” (2 Corinthians 6:14)? We are the light and cannot let our light be dimmed by
the darkness of this world.
Our goal is to be like Christ and God. We see that the idea of purity, holiness, and light
describe who God is. “This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is
Light; in Him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in
the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth” (1 John 1:5-6). God wants us to live a life
without sin. We are to strive each day to be obedient to His word in order to be pleasing to Him.
