I DON’T CARE WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS!
I really do try to avoid watching the news on a regular basis. It seems to me more and more
that each day is a repeat of the day before, and very little “good” news is reported. I also limit the
“news” I see on social media, because it does very little in helping to keep a positive and joyful
attitude in my life.
I did tune into the news a couple of weeks ago when the abortion bill was signed into law by
the governor. Yes, leading up to the signing day I saw the protests—from both sides. The sign
that caught my attention was a sign stating “I Don’t Care What the Bible Says.” Sadly, I feel this
may very well become the rallying cry supporting many “laws” contrary to God’s will. It indeed
shows how far our country has fallen from the founding fathers and their belief in God.
But let’s consider a different perspective regarding the words, “I Don’t Care What the Bible
Says.” How do we [God’s people] measure up to what God really wants in our lives? Do we find
ourselves at odds with what God’s Word says to us? Do we follow His Word only when it is
convenient in our plans? Do we find ourselves “bending” His Word to accommodate our way of
life or what we think is really important in living for the Lord? Do we find ourselves
“interpreting” Scripture with the preface, “This is what I think it means”? You see, if we draw
out that line of questioning far enough, we may find that we are not too far from the sentiments
of this particular protester and their take on the Bible.
A couple of weeks ago I shared the sentiments of a faithful gospel preacher regarding the
church “drifting” from the security of God’s Word. I am sure for the most part that we are trying
to say the right things, but I am concerned that we may not be living the same things we are
saying. I have had several discussions this past week regarding the Lord’s words in Matthew that
we are to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” Are we showing the world the
“best” way to live or are we allowing the world to draw us away from the Lord. Just a reminder
of the concluding thoughts of Jesus in reference to salt, “...but if the salt has become tasteless,
how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and
trampled underfoot by men” (Mt. 5:13).
May we show our love for God and His Word by living it day by day. “If you love Me, you
will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). ~P. Mowrer
