FAMILIES: Resisting Satan’s Attacks (cont.)

Distraction

In the event we do get to sit still for more than five minutes together, we now have these

wonderful little personal computers disguised as phones. We can stay connected to everyone

across the globe while distancing ourselves from the people across the table from us. I run the

risk of sounding old and outdated, but we are raising a generation of young people who do not

know how to interact face to face with people. They are finding it much more comfortable to

hide behind the web than to have a conversation with a real person.

Recently, a Chick-fil- A in Georgia started encouraging patrons to put their cell phones in

a box on the table for the entire meal. If they did so, they would all be rewarded with free ice

cream. Because some families that tried it were unsuccessful the first time, they came back a

second time to attempt to get it right. Others wanted to take the box with them so that they could

try it in their home. It is amazing that we have to offer free ice cream to get families to sit still

and fellowship with each other for a few minutes of the day rather than checking statuses and

messages.

Phones are certainly not our only distraction, but they are probably the number one by a

good margin. Recent studies show that we spend 4.7 hours on our phones each day. Considering

we are awake only around 15 hours a day, that is almost one-third of our waking time. This kind

of distraction can’t be good for our spiritual health and the health of our family. Those who are

spending that kind of time on their technological devices are not likely to be spending enough

time in the pages of God’s Word. ~Ben Hayes

A Personal Note: I realize that new technology allows us to reach more people with less effort,

but I wonder if the messages we sometimes post are perhaps more detrimental to the church in

the ongoing battle with Satan. Let us examine our words closely to be sure that they are pure and

holy and in line with the Lord, instead of hypocritical and contrary to His will. ~ P.Mowrer
