Who are you serving?

“As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. ‘Tell us,”

they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the

age?’” (Matthew 24:3). Jesus answers questions that the disciples don’t even ask. Jesus tells

them they can’t know when he will return (Matt. 24:36-51). According to Matt. 25:1-13, Jesus

tells his disciples they need to be looking for that day and be ready. In Matt. 25:14-30, Jesus tells

the disciples they are to use the talents they have been given by God while they wait. Then Jesus

tells them what will happen when he does return (Matt. 25:31-46). Jesus paints a picture of the

day of judgement.

Let’s look at the passage. “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see You

hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? When did we see You a

stranger and invite You in, or needing clothes and clothe You? When did we see You sick or in

prison and go to visit You?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of

the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me’” (Matt. 25:37-40). Jesus states

that when we do something for our fellow Christians, it is just the same as doing it for Him.

When we do something to help out, or serve our brothers and sisters in Christ, we are really

serving Jesus! We are getting to help the Creator of the universe, the one who died for our sins.

So, the original question takes on a much bigger and deeper meaning. It is so hard for us to

think in spiritual terms. We are surrounded by a spiritual war, we are filled with a spirit, we serve

a spiritual God. Sadly, for most of us, we don’t give it much thought. We must keep Christ first

in our hearts and our eyes on our heavenly home. When our focus is right, and when our heart is

right, then our service will be right. The next time you see a fellow brother or sister in need,

remember it’s a chance not only to serve that person, but also to serve Jesus. ~B. Tolbert
