Thank You Lord!

It is easy to find ourselves from time to time repeating statements that rattle off the
tongue easily, but also mindlessly. Or perhaps the words have been used so much that the true
meaning may have been lost. Consider the song, “Thank You, Lord!”. As we sing this song from
time to time, do we stop to consider what the words are really saying or have we allowed the
meaning of the words to escape us?
“For all that You’ve done,…” What has God done for us? The chorus answers the
statement describing the love of God, sending His Son to die on the cross, setting us free from
the law of sin and death (John 3:16; Romans 8:1-2).
“For all that You’re going to do…” What is it that we know God is going to do for us?
We know that God has promised a home eternal for those who believe (John 1:12; 1 John
5:13). We know that as we journey through this life, there is nothing that can separate us from
His wonderful love (Romans 8:38-39).
“For all that You’ve promised and all that You are…” What has God promised and who
is He really? God has promised eternal life to all who believe (Romans 6:23; 1 John 2:25) and
that we can be called His children (Romans 8:14; Galatians 3:26). And who can begin to
describe God in all His power and might? “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and
knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways” (Romans
11:33).
“...is all that has carried me through,…” It is God’s hand that guides us day by day in
green pastures, by quiet waters, and through dark valleys (Psalm 23). He has promised never to
leave us, so we have no reason to fear (Hebrews 13:5).
Yes, we have much to be thankful for in our lives as children of God! And these are just a
few of the many blessings of God. If we were to spend time listing all the blessings we have in
Christ, we truly would be surprised to see what the Lord has done.
So, as we enter into this next week amidst all the celebration, take a few moments to
share with family some of the many blessings we enjoy from God. Don’t just limit the list to the
numerous physical blessings. Be sure to spend some time thanking the Lord for the spiritual
blessings which are just as numerous. And then, let us be joyful that we have such a loving and
gracious God!
