Jesus The Man

While I was cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the WFC Thursday, I was reminded of an
event in the life of Jesus. We often think of the miraculous signs and wonders performed by
Jesus. We think of His wonderful teaching to His disciples and large crowds. We usually think of
the spiritual and often don’t give much thought to Jesus as a human. We seem to forget that Jesus
grew up and learned skills and did normal everyday things. Even after His resurrection Jesus
continues to show His disciples His humanity to show them that He was a flesh and blood man.
In the book of John, we see Jesus preparing a simple meal. Jesus has the skills to properly
prepare coals for cooking, and the ability to cook a meal of fish and bread. This event is recorded
only in a few short verses and it brings up some interesting questions. Where did Jesus get the
fish and supplies to make the bread? Who taught Jesus to cook? What kind of wood did He use?
Several of the disciples had been out fishing all night without catching anything. Jesus calls
to them from the shore and tells them to cast out the net on the other side of the boat. They
finally made a catch and headed for shore. “When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire
in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you
have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153
of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and
have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are you?” They knew it was
the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now
the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after He was raised from the dead” (John
21:9-14, ESV).
In these verses, Jesus does something simple, He meets His disciples needs. He prepares
food and serves them a meal and “Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the
dead”. It doesn’t have to always be a big thing to have a profound impact on a person’s life.
