Superhuman
If you have watched TV or been to the movies in the last few years, then you’ve seen an
advertisement for a superhero movie. Superpowers like flying, speed, and healing are common
powers you may have seen. I think we all have had times we wished we could be Wonder
Woman or Superman.
We have a power that can be a true superpower. It can be wide reaching and have
powerful effects on all those around us. It is the power of patience.
Our patience should come from our love. Our love helps us be under- standing of others
as well as forgiving. “Love is patient” (1 Cor. 13:4, NIV).
We are instructed to have patience several times in the Bible. “Be joyful in hope, patient
in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Romans 12:12, NIV). “Be still before the Lord and wait
patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their
wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. For
those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land”
(Psalm 37:7-9, NIV). A lack of patience will lead us to evil.
Jesus is our standard. His example is our goal and the Bible states that He has unlimited,
or as some translations use, “perfect patience”. “But for that very reason I was shown mercy so
that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His unlimited patience as an example
for those who would believe on Him and receive eternal life” (1 Timothy 1:16, NIV). How we
show patience to those around us can have a profound impact on their lives. Patience has an
impact on how people see us. A person without patience is often seen as rude and uncaring.
These characteristics are the opposite of what it means to be a Christian. ~B Tolbert
